I keep coming back, mentally, to one of the sexiest things I’ve seen. It wasn’t a Victoria Secret display, or a porn star, or even a fashion advertisement in any way. It was a woman walking down a Manhattan street on her way to work early one morning. What was sexy was the dress she wore, because it made my mind go into overdrive. My first reaction was to stop and make sure she was actually wearing clothes. I quickly realized she was but that the dress was a shade darker than her peach skin and looked akin to a burgeoning tan. The dress was tight-fitting and stretch lace over a matching colored fabric underneath. There was plenty of fabric, but the mind quickly wondered where the dress ended and the woman began, and just how much different would her skin be if the dress was removed.

There is a fine line in determining how much description to add in developing a scene, character, or relationship. There needs to be enough description to create a viable, believable, and luscious infrastructure for the story to build upon. At the same time if you describe every brick and the color/texture of the mortar holding the structure together there is nothing for the reader to add internally and unconsciously as the reader devours, hopefully, what you have written. There needs to be enough space for the reader to step in and let their own creativity fill in otherwise the reader does not become a part of the reading experience. If the reader is not led to fill in the gaps with their own wants, desires, and needs, then the reader will never get so immersed into the book that it becomes a cherished

We love or hate stories. We rant or praise about writers. We hug a book or throw it across a room. We are very passionate about the written word. Why?

When we live an experience the memories are created in our synaptic highways and chemical depots of our brain. Similar experiences, a chance image, an unexpected smell brings up to the forefront what we once did.

Is reading so different?

When we immerse ourselves in books, the words echo in our brains, our muscles react, and our senses come on-line as we escape into what the writer has provided us. Memories are created for later retrieval just as if we were once of the characters.

So is it really that surprising that books can lead to love-making or war? In the act of reading, our brains become imprinted and the book is digested into us. We are in fact experiencing the book when we recall it to mind later.

Have you ever listened to the way you speak? I mean really listened. Take a moment to consider how you tell someone you had a great or heinous day. I’m betting you don’t create the sentence to match how your high school English teacher would grade such as “I had a lovely day, thank you.” We don’t talk the same language we write or read. Spoken dialog is not the same beast as the written tongue. If you want to create memorable characters and powerful scenes, it is best to keep this in mind. The dialog has to flow in the reader’s mind as if they were actually speaking the words themselves or hearing their lover, friend, or enemy say them.

Read your dialog out loud. Do you hit snags that sound awkward? Do you grimace at the prescribed word order or word choice? Change it then. Perfect grammar is for term papers and essays. In the fiction novel you need to create a believable world for the reader to enter into, and nothing stops a reader from suspending disbelief more than fine tuned dialog that comes out of a ‘How To Write’ manual.

Being a transman, has given me an interesting perspective in writing romance novels. I was born with a female presentation, and spent my child and teen years attempting to be a woman, but never quite managed to fit it. As I grew up, I realized my problem in finding love, falling in love, and being true to myself revolved around coming to terms with my own gender. And so I transitioned. How does this affect my writing? In three major ways.

First, I spent my hormonally challenged youth being female and surrounded by other females. I know what women, what I wanted, in romance. Like so many others, I immersed myself in romance novels hoping to catch a glimpse of true love and my heart’s delight. But then I transitioned, and came into another view of romance and love. As a man, my context changed and I got an inside glimpse of what men desire. This dual experience provides me a larger context for writing romance from a dualistic point of view.

Second, I know from running on estrogen to running on testosterone how much chemicals affect how we perceive and relate to the people around us. I have a rare honor of knowing how women and men talk both internally to themselves and externally amidst others.

Together, this makes writing romance novels more exciting. My female and male characters take different points of my own history to make them feel like living, breathing people one could meet on the street. I never want the reader to feel the female lead is unrealistic or for that matter that the male lead is false feeling. I use my own extensive experience living life as both genders to put flesh and blood into my characters.

Third, as I experimented with gender and gender presentation, my own hang ups and feelings of shame or guilt about sex and sexual needs exploded. I use this personal knowledge of guilt, desire, and need to move the characters in the novels through their own travails of BDSM as it plays out in romance.

No matter what, a writer will only succeed if experience backs up characters to make them feel real. My own unusual past has helped my writing in casting both genders as leads and in exploring how society inhibits sexual expression in love.

You take the average romance book of a bookstore or library’s shelf and begin to read. Yes there is a couple fighting their emotions and eventually succumbing, but something obvious is missing. Here we have two flesh and blood people emotional enough to fight their passions and then fall prey to them, but what about the truly obvious? Where are their genitals? You would be hard pressed to find one person on this planet, let alone the number of couples populating all the romance novels ever written, that don’t have genitals. Face it we are a horny species with our year round breeding season. So why is this missing from most romance books? Why do you have to go to a special, adult only section, to get true romance that involve all ‘parts’ of an adult person? The castration in regular romances is troublesome. Sure we’d like to think the person sharing a life with us wants more than in our pants, but the truth is most people are also horny and a balanced relationship involves more than chit chat and dating with all clothes on. I think it is time that erotic romance wasn’t considered an abnormal form of romantic stories but the norm.
